The registration of births in Nothern Ireland became (under an act of parliament) compulsory in 1864 but before this, records were maintained by the Church in Parish Registrars. The year 1864 saw the beginning of civil registration in Ireland, and all births, deaths and marriages were recorded in it, at least in theory. Some unregistered births were, especially in the early stages of civil registration and in particular with rural people who may have had to travel long distances to register.

Birth records are limited to the beginning of civil registration within each country. For Northern Ireland order online for any event which took place on or after 1st July 1864 to 6 months from the current date provided you have sufficient information to identify the entry. Any birth certificate within England and Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, States of Guernsey, Island of Jersey, Isle of Man and Ireland can be re-issued, as well as Birth registered overseas but was registered with the appropriate United Kingdom authority within the country of Birth. These would include Armed Forces, Consular, High Commission or Embassy registrations. Please bear in mind that Birth registration with the British authorities is not compulsory when overseas, and a duplicate certificate can only be issued if the Birth certificate has been deposited with either the Embassy or Consulate within the country of Birth, or at the Foreign & Commonwealth Office in London upon return to the United Kingdom.
The certificates are always produced by an official registration office and can be validated at any time. Where British nationals are born abroad, we can additionally supply copies of certificates relating to any United Kingdom births abroad registered at a Consulate, High Commission, or with the Armed Forces. This service only applies to those births that have actually been registered with the United Kingdom authorities.
For an adopted child the birth certificate can only be obtained if the original full birth name of the child is known. We cannot issue a birth certificate using an adopted name. In these cases, an Adoption Certificate would be more appropriate. TheĀ Adoption Certificate would be presented wherever the birth certificate is required.
